Margaret Henningsen

Margaret Henningsen currently serves as the chairperson of the I Have a Dream Foundation – Milwaukee (IHDF – MKE) Board of Directors. She has served in that position since the inception of IHDF-MKE in 2007. Over the last fourteen years of preparing the Dreamers for college, Margaret has consistently been a champion of the importance of a good college education.

She was a founder of Legacy Bank, a state chartered commercial bank that was in the heart of the city of Milwaukee. At the age of 50, she followed her dream of addressing the lack of comprehensive banking services for women and minorities in her community. As the founder of Legacy Bank, she was the first woman in the history of the state of Wisconsin to charter a commercial bank. Her goal was to be an advocate for empowering women and minorities. She recognized that the ability to create wealth; and the need for getting a good education were necessary to transform lives. She wanted to make sure that minority students had the same opportunity she had to pursue their dreams.

Margaret is also the founder of the Milwaukee Juneteenth Day celebration. Milwaukee was the first northern city to celebrate Juneteenth. She has served on many community boards, as a volunteer for a number of political campaigns and a mentor to hundreds of women and girls.
